The role of art in intercultural dialogue is so important. The arts present us with a gateway through which we can readily engage with cultural traditions, histories and rituals etc
Intercult organises the CORNERS Caucasus Xpedition 27 September to 13 October 2011. 30
artists, researchers and cultural producers, from 9 European countries, travel by bus from
Hopa (Turkey), through Georgia and Azerbaijan, to meet people in the region and find
stories and inspiration for new artistic work.
Intercult initiates large scale trans-national and interdisciplinary artistic projects. Intercult is active in the Swedish and European cultural policy arena.
The goal of the arts project CORNERS is to produce and tour new art work based on ideas
collected from the corners of Europe. Stories on one street corner will be retold on another street corner. The expedition meets with local artists, refugees, politicians, cultural organizations and citizens during two intense weeks on the road. It is these encounters that will determine which stories are gathered by the artists and researchers that participate in the expedition.
Chris Torch, artistic director of CORNERS and founder of Intercult:
CORNERS expedition to the Caucasus presents one of our greatest challenges. Creating a
constructive dialogue with countries like Georgia and Azerbaijan demands a special intercultural sensitivity. And this is where cultural exchange comes in. It is often first in the realm of culture and the arts that contacts are developed, understandings are reached and tensions reduced. Our objective is to strengthen bonds between individuals, who become multipliers, through their art and through their cultural ambition. Bringing the corners of Europe into the center and changing our way of seeing the world.
The Xpedition will in Hopa between 28-29 September.
